There Will Your Heart Be Also

I've been reading in Luke, revisiting Jesus' birth lately. I've also been trying to imagine what it must have been like to be Jesus' mother. What kind of woman was she? Was God's call on her life easy for her to embrace, or did she wrestle with it often? I mean, He did ask her to carry a baby. As a virgin. You can use your imagination and guess what the townspeople called her.

"But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19 ESV).

This girl--literally--just birthed Jesus Christ, whom Gabriel told her would be her Savior (and yours and mine). There she was, I'm sure, overwhelmed that she was now a mom to begin with, and then shepherds came to worship her baby.

And when they did, she treasured it in her heart.

I've been asking God to reveal to me what I treasure in my heart, and where I treasure the wrong things--to change my heart.

Jesus grew up and taught others how to live a life that treasures the things of God. He said, "Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Luke 12:33b-34 ESV).

My treasures at times (usually in stretches where I'm distant from Christ and not wholly seeking His plan for my life) are focused on what I can get, what I can be known for, what will give me status, etc. But when I wrap myself in scripture, I feel God compelling me to invest in eternal things rather than earthly things:

My marriage--how I can serve my husband as Christ serves the church.

My children--not to idolize them, but to invest in their souls to grow into people who passionately run after God's heart.

Relationships. Serving and loving others.

Representing the body of Christ, to which I belong.

Asking how I can promote the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I'm certainly not GOOD at these things; I'm just working on them as a sinner who needs Christ's mercy daily.

What treasures are you laying up?

Peace of Christ to you,
